Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics ACP Award 2014

ACP Award 2014 goes to Peter Zotter, PSI

Peter Zotter

The ACP award 2014 was given to Peter Zotter from the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) for his PhD thesis "Sources of fossil and non-fossil atmospheric aerosols". The award was handed over at the "Swiss Geoscience Meeting" 2014 in Fribourg.

Peter Zotters thesis reports about the careful analysis of the isotopic 14C/12C ratio in aerosol that resulted in a unique dataset. These ratios allow to estimate the contributions of fossil and non-fossil sources to the carbon in particular matter. He also distinguished between elemental and organic carbon which is essential for gaining a better understanding of the apportionment of the sources of secondary organic aerosol.

The price was sponsored by the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN.
